POULSBO – The Mountaineers hung with North Kitsap for the first half, but the Vikings were able to shut down Mount Baker in the second half as they won 31-14 at home on Friday night.
North Kitsap rattled off big run after big run early on, and went on to score the first touchdown of the game, a 28-yard run in the first quarter.
The Mountaineers were able to answer when senior linebacker Gunner McGrath picked off a pass, and junior quarterback Tyson Barksdale hit senior wide receiver Zyan Paglia on a 50-yard bomb, which helped set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Barksdale a few plays later. Enoc Smith’s extra point tied the game at 7-7 early in the second quarter.
It continued to be a game of back and forth in the second quarter as the Vikings scored on a one-yard touchdown run, and Baker was able to do the same as Barksdale scored his second touchdown of the game.
North Kitsap was able to move the ball against the clicking clock at the end of the first half, just enough to attempt a 37-yard field goal as time expired, and when it went through, the Vikings held a slight 17-14 lead at the half.
The second half belonged to the home team, as it was able to score twice more on touchdown runs, and were able to hold the Mounties scoreless in the entire second half.
Senior fullback Andrew Monteith led Mount Baker on the ground with 54 yards on 14 carries, and Paglia had 60 yards receiving on two receptions.
The defense was led by senior defensive tackle Aaron Torres who finished with 6.5 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a quarterback sack. Junior safety Pepe McIvoy-Salgado added 9.5 tackles, and McGrath had two stops behind the line of scrimmage and a fumble recovery to go with his early interception.
The Mountaineers (1-1) will travel to Kamiak (0-2) on Friday to take on the 4A Knights at 7:00.
