EVERETT – Even though the Mariners put up a heck of a fight, the outcome was expected, as Archbishop Murphy defeated Sehome 55-14 at Terry Ennis Stadium on Friday night.
The Wildcats scored the first three touchdowns of the game, but Sehome was able to break through in the first quarter and after a 34-yard completion from junior quarterback Jad Geiger to senior wide receiver Nicky Smith, the Mariners were in business.
Shortly after that, Sehome scored its first points of the season when Geiger his sophomore wide receiver Oliver Johnson on a 6-yard scoring play. Bane Mitchell’s extra point made it 21-7, but Archbishop Murphy continued to churn out big play after big play.
Four touchdowns were scored by the defending 2A state champions in the second quarter alone, and the score was 48-7 at the midway break.
Geiger hit Smith on another long pass in the third quarter, this time it covered 53 yards and ended as a touchdown. Geiger finished the game with 246 yards on 14-of-26 passing. Smith hauled in four passes for a career-high 142 yards, and senior wide receiver Gunnar Anderson caught six passes for 71 yards.
Sehome’s defense was led by Johnson and senior linebacker Devon Bengtsson who each had 4.5 tackles and a tackle for loss. Senior linebacker Evan Hatzl also picked up 4.5 tackles.
The Mariners (0-2) will travel to Sultan (1-1) on Friday to take on the Turks at 7:00.
