EDMONDS – Just think about all of the legendary players that have carried the ball in Golden Eagle history. From John Locker to Jake Locker, to Donny Finkbonner, Matthias Wilson and Robert Davis.

However, none of them accomplished what Elliot Lenssen was able to do in Friday night’s 49-26 victory at Edmonds-Woodway.
Lenssen’s 368 yards rushing on 26 carries broke the school record for rushing yards in a game, which was previously held by Matthias Wilson who ran for 307 yards against Arlington in 1997. Wilson finished with 2678 yards that season, which broke the state record at the time, and he was named the state’s player of the year for all classifications.
Ferndale started fast once again, and scored three touchdowns in the first quarter, this time with senior fullback Wyatt Broyles leading it off with an 8-yard scoring run. He also bookended the scoring with the final touchdown of the game, a powerful seven-yarder that saw multiple broken tackles.
The five Golden Eagle touchdowns in the middle were scored by Lenssen. He also had multiple long runs called back, which would have put him well over 400 yards on the night.

Lenssen’s 368 rushing yards were also the most by a Whatcom County player since 2017 when Triston Smith of Squalicum churned out 445 yards against South Delta in a wild game that ended 85-70.
The Warriors were able to pick up big chunks of yards through the air, but were forced to play catchup the entire game.
In addition to scoring two touchdowns, Broyles also stood out on defense as he switched back and forth from playing defensive end and linebacker. He finished with seven tackles, two quarterback sacks and a tackle for loss. Senior defensive back Brock Heuck also had a nice game defensively with seven tackles, a tackle for loss and a pass broken up.
The Golden Eagles (2-0) will host Lynden (2-0) on Friday at 7:00.
