BLAINE – The first quarter belonged to the Borderites, but it was all Mavericks after that as Meadowdale defeated Blaine 41-7 at Blaine High School on Friday night.
The Borderites used up the majority of the first quarter clock with a methodical drive to open the game that covered 77 yards in 14 plays. Junior quarterback Connor Brown was a perfect 8-for-8 for 58 yards on the drive, including a 14-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Hunter Candanoza.
Blaine’s defense also stood strong early on, as it forced a punt at the end of the quarter.
From there, the Mavericks played on Blaine’s side of the field for the vast majority of the game.
It still remained just a one-score game at halftime, and Meadowdale extended its lead to 21-7 at the end of three quarters, but picking up first downs was tough for the Borderites, and the Mavericks poured it on in the fourth quarter by scoring three more touchdowns.
After Blaine’s opening drive, the Borderites were shut down to just 93 yards of offense for the remainder of the game.
Candanoza led the offense with eight receptions for 67 yards, and senior wide receiver Peyton Bouma caught four passes for 58 yards.
Bouma and senior middle linebacker Axel Shelton each had 8.5 tackles to lead the defense, while senior outside linebacker Matt Noa collected 7.5 stops and sophomore defensive end Asher Hagee had a quarterback sack.
The Borderites (1-1) will travel to Bellevue Christian (1-1) on Saturday to take on the Vikings at 1:00.
