NOOKSACK – In both team’s openers in 1A conference play, Nooksack Valley got off to a fast start and cruised by Blaine 46-10 at Sid Lambert Field on Friday night.
Coming into the game, the leading scorer for the Pioneers was junior Treven Scheenstra with his 10 touchdowns, and he added two more in the first quarter, which was also coupled with a pair of touchdowns from fellow junior Tyler Martin.
Martin’s first score was on a 22-yard interception return for a touchdown, his conference-leading sixth interception of the season and second defensive score of the year, and his second came on a perfectly thrown 28-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Lucas Woodrich.
Just like that, it was 27-0 after one quarter of play.
Woodrich then found his cousin, A.J. Woodrich, for a one-yard touchdown as Nooksack Valley went into the midway break up 33-0.
The Borderites took the second-half kickoff and put together their strongest drive of the game, with junior quarterback Connor Brown scrambling east and west and throwing down the field to numerous receivers. He ended the drive by finding freshman tight end Dmitriy Shvorak over the middle for an 18-yard touchdown.
Brown finished with a team-high 46 yards rushing to go with his 150 yards passing.
The Pioneers would score twice more in the third quarter as junior running back Trey Heutink scored from 22 yards out, and senior running back Eli King punched one in from two yards out. Heutink finished with 98 yards rushing on 10 carries.
Blaine scored the final points of the game when junior Hunter Candanoza nailed a 30-yard field goal in the final minute.
Nooksack Valley (5-0) will travel to Mount Baker (3-2) on Friday to take on the Mountaineers at 7:00, and the Borderites (2-3) will host Meridian (2-3) on Friday at 7:00.
