Lynden Drops Sehome

BELLINGHAM – The Lions looked dominant once again as they defeated the Mariners for the 23rd straight time, and did it by a score of 48-7 at Civic Stadium on Friday night.

Sehome captured the momentum on the opening kickoff when Bane Mitchell’s booted the ball directly at one of the front line Lynden players, and the ball came back to the Mariners and was secured by senior Callum Laplant.

Gaining as many possessions as possible was going to be crucial for the Mariners, but they were eventually forced to punt, and the Lions quickly went to work with the run game. Their first drive ended with a 10-yard touchdown run by senior Dawson VanDalen.

The Lynden defense then forced a 3-and-out, and it was time to for the Lions to give junior Austin Postma a turn at quarterback. Three plays later, Postma found senior Gordy Bedlington down the seam for a 72-yard touchdown.

Lynden forced another punt, and gained possession, but quickly found itself in a 4th-and-7 situation on the Mariner 27-yard line. Unfazed by the situation, the Lions went to the air and Bedlington completed an 18-yard pass to tight end Cayden Brown. On the next play, the two seniors hooked up again, this time on a 9-yard touchdown and Lynden was up 21-0 early in the second quarter.

The Mariners then put together a very strong drive behind the strong arm of Jad Geiger who was darting his receivers left and right as they moved down the field. They were able to get into the red zone, but a pass into the end zone was intercepted by senior corner back Sam Arango, and Lynden took over at its own 20.

Postma re-entered the game behind center and promptly thanked Arango by throwing down the far sideline in his direction. Arango hauled it in and took it 80 yards for the score.

Bedlington then scored a rushing touchdown before the half, and the Lions were up 35-0 at the midway break.

Postma hit Bedlington with a 13-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, which triggered the running clock for the rest of the game as Bedlington finished with a passing touchdown, a receiving touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns.

Postma also showed his efficiency as he was 4-for-4 through the air for 168 yards and three touchdowns.

Postma

Sehome got on the board early in the fourth quarter when Geiger hit senior wide receiver Gunnar Anderson on a 54-yard touchdown, but it was quickly answered by the Lion backups as sophomore quarterback Jace Baseden tossed a 55-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Zane Schatte to close out the scoring.

The Lions ran just 29 plays in the entire game and put up nearly 400 yards of offense.

Geiger finished with 215 yards passing, and his main target was senior tight end Devon Bengtsson who finished with 10 receptions for 78 yards.

Lynden (4-1) will host top-ranked Anacortes (5-0) on Friday at 7:00, and the Mariners (1-4) will renew their city rivalry with Bellingham (2-3) at Civic Stadium on Friday at 7:00.
