ARLINGTON – It was all Lions on Friday night, as they came into town on Friday night to take on Lakewood and defeated the Cougars 49-6 at Dick Cardinal Stadium.
Both teams aired it out early, and after Lakewood completed five straight passes to begin the game, pass number six was intercepted at the goal line by Gordy Bedlington, and it was Lynden who was now in control.
Strong runs by Dawson VanDalen moved the ball down the field, but the Lions got on the scoreboard when Bedlington saw a height mismatch down the right sideline, and lofted the ball into the endzone for senior right end Cayden Brown who hauled in the 24-yard touchdown reception.
Junior quarterback Austin Postma got his try behind center during Lynden’s second offensive possession, and he answered the bell with a 60-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Sam Arango.
The Cougars were able to score their lone touchdown of the game on the first play of the second quarter, but from there, it was the Lion run game that made the difference.
Running behind massive left tackle Zach Dykstra, Lynden totaled 361 yards rushing, with VanDalen and Postma leading the way as each player ended with 129 yards on the ground. VanDalen finished with a pair of scores, and Postma found his way into the end zone for the second week in a row after returning an interception for a touchdown.
Bedlington also ripped off a dynamic 30-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and junior running back Cash Triplett carried the ball five times for 38 yards on Lynden’s final drive of the game, which culminated with a 3-yard scoring run by Triplett.
The pass-happy Cougars were able to move the ball 244 yards through the air, but were intercepted three times, and Lynden also collected seven sacks. Junior defensive lineman Jack Williams led the pass rush with 2.5 sacks of his own.
Senior linebacker Adam Holman collected 5.5 tackles and he also forced two fumbles, one of which was recovered by junior defensive lineman Cort Andrew.
Arango also shot his way up the Lynden record book as he finished with 67 yards receiving, which moved him past Dirk Dallas into seventh place on the school’s all-time list in career receiving yards.
Lynden (2-0) will travel to Ferndale (2-0) on Friday to take on the Golden Eagles at 7:00.
