NOOKSACK – It was all Lynden Christian in the 1A state play-in game as the Lyncs shut out Annie Wright 42-0 at Sid Lambert Field on Friday night.
A pleasant site for LC fans was the return of All-State senior running back Chris Kooiman who got things clicking with a 42-yard touchdown run, which came moments after another long touchdown run was called back due to a penalty.
He then ripped off a 33-yard touchdown run in Lynden Christian’s following possession, as it looked like Kooiman was eager to get back onto the football field.
The Lyncs then went to the air on the next drive, and junior quarterback Kellen Blankers threw a strike down the middle of the field to senior wide receiver Wyatt Kamphouse who was able to pluck it out of the air and score on a 55-yard touchdown.
The first quarter ended with a score of 21-0.
The second score featured a cameo from senior Dawson Hintz at quarterback who ripped off an athletic 30-yard run, and Kooiman finished the drive with his third touchdown of the night, this time from five yards out.
Hintz was also able to get into the end zone in the second quarter, and the Lyncs led 35-0 at the midway break.
The Lynden Christian defense was strong the entire game, and had multiple stops behind the line of scrimmage. Sophomore cornerback Josh Senti had two tackles for loss, and the six others came from six different players.
Blankers was able to find Kamphouse in the corner of the end zone early in the third quarter, and that triggered the running clock. The rest of the game was able to move quickly, and almost end right as the heavy rain came into play.
It is likely that with the shutout win the Lyncs will remain with one of the top seeds and get a bye in the first round of the 1A state playoffs. The official bracket will be announced on Sunday, early in the afternoon.
