SEATTLE – Whatcom County was well represented at the 2A state girls tennis tournament, with the Lynden Lions taking the 2A state championship as a team.
Senior Halley Brooks won the state championship in singles competition, while seniors Avery Brooks and Rilanna Newcomb won the state championship in doubles competition. It was the rare trifecta of winning in singles, doubles and as a team.
For Halley Brooks, that makes two state championships in two years (doubles last season), and Avery Brooks won her second straight doubles state championship.
Newcomb will graduate as one of the most decorated tennis players in Whatcom County history as she placed in the top four in the state in either doubles or singles in all four years.
Amelie Everett and Maria Horja of Sehome took second place in the doubles tournament, and Mariner senior Gabriela Gracia-Salgado took seventh place in singles competition.
On the 1A side in Yakima, Ana Tuski of Blaine lost her play-in match, and Blaine’s doubles-team of Bea Dickson and Carly Saunders bowed out after dropping its first match.
