Sehome freshman Garrett Gibbons picked up his Whatcom County leading eighth win of the season on Saturday.

In the first round of the 2A State Tournament, the Mariners tallied up five runs on five hits in the top of the third inning to give them the early lead. They needed every bit of it as they held on to defeat the Bearcats who had the tying run in scoring position when Jad Geiger struck the final batter out to collect his second save of the season. Freshman pitcher Garrett Gibbons picked up his Whatcom County-leading eighth win of the season, while Hudson Neff, Gunnar Tweit, Max Braunstein and Geiger each had a pair of hits.

Fife 7, Lynden 5

Even though the Lions scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Trojans came back in a strong way and led 6-2 after four innings. Lynden kept fighting, and would score three more runs over the final three innings, but Fife never relinquished the lead. Dawson VanDalen and Spencer Adams each had a pair of hits, and Matthew Carroll drove in three runs to lead Lynden. The Lion’s season came to a close with a record of 17-8.

Orting 14, Sehome 3

The Mariners’ breakout season came to a sudden halt on Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals scored in bunches, and led 9-3 after just two innings. Max Braunstein drove in two runs for Sehome, while Jad Geiger doubled and Riley Carlson singled. Orting smashed 15 hits and walked seven times. Sehome’s season ended with a record of 19-7. Sehome’s 19 wins this season was the most the school has had in a season since 2011.

Lynden Christian 7, Naches Valley 0

A double off the bat of Eli Stamps got things going for the Lyncs with a two-run double, and led 2-0 before they recorded an out. Stamps then came around to score on a single by Vance Elton, and senior pitcher Sam Kok was able to cruise from there. He scattered eight hits over the complete-game shutout, didn’t walk any batters and struck out seven to get his team-high sixth win of the season. He also had two hits offensively, as did Eli Maberry and Stamps.

King’s 12, Lynden Christian 2

The Lyncs battled the Knights closely through the first five innings, and found themselves down 1-0, but King’s broke it wide open in the top of the sixth by scoring eight runs, and Lynden Christian was never able to recover. Trey Johnson tripled for LC, who also got singles from fellow seniors Eli Maberry and Jaxon Huleatt. Brayden Engels drove in both runs for the Lyncs who ended their season with a 17-8 record.
