Squalicum's Caden Seyler heads in a goal for the first goal of the game.

BELLINGHAM – The Storm opened up the 3A District 1 boys soccer tournament with a 3-0 win over Edmonds-Woodway at Civic Stadium on Saturday.

Squalicum attacked early as Edmonds sat back and absorbed pressure, hoping to keep the game low scoring. Squalicum didn’t find a breakthrough until mid-way through the second half when sophomore center back Caden Seyler headed home a well executed corner kick.

Going into the second half up 1-0, junior Mason Kyles and senior Bailey Wilson continued to keep Edmonds offense at arms distance from the goal. Team captain Carl Peterson controlled the middle of the park well as the game drove on. The Storm had energy off the bench from senior outside back Eddie Suarez and sophomore forward Addison Shrock.

With only 15 minutes remaining the Storm’s leading scorer, Justice Chala, was able to deflect the ball on target from inside the 6-yard box, giving the Storm a 2-0 advantage late in the half. In the final minutes of the game senior Ale Tomasi beat an Edmonds-Woodway defender and curled a shot into the upper corner, leaving the final score 3-0 to the home side.

Squalicum will take on Snohomish in the winners bracket semi-final at 5:00 today at Shoreline Stadium. The winner will have an automatic bid into the 3A state tournament.
