BELLINGHAM – It was a rough start for the Storm at home as Burlington-Edison scored three touchdowns in the first quarter on its way to a 42-21 win over Squalicum at Civic Stadium on Friday night.
After forcing a punt on the first drive of the game, the Tigers took control and drove down the field to score their first touchdown of the game.
Burlington-Edison’s fortune became richer on the next play from scrimmage by recovering a fumble, and then scoring two plays later from two yards out.
The Tigers scored again on a deep pass in the first quarter, and then gained control once again late in the first after recovering another fumble.
Even though Burlington-Edison went on to score the next touchdown and take a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter, from that point on, the Storm were able to right the ship and outscore the Tigers the rest of the way. One of the big moves was inserting senior Phoenix Price at quarterback.
Although he threw two interceptions, Price’s other nine pass attempts were all completed, and two of then went to senior tight end Ray Hoffmann for touchdowns.
Sophomore fullback Tucker Hofstedt also showed his speed on a 42-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. He finished with a team-high 79 yards on 10 carries.
The Squalicum defense was on the field for the vast majority of the game, and was led by junior linebacker Noah Gilbert who finished with 11.5 tackles. Hoffmann added 10 tackles and a pass broken up from his strong safety position, and senior outside linebacker Maddox Strickland finished with eight tackles.
The Storm (1-2) will travel to Nooksack Valley (3-0) on Friday to battle the Pioneers at 7:00.
