Mount Baker Finishes Strong Against 4A Foe

EVERETT – After a quarter and a half it was tied game at 14-14, but from there on out it was all Mountaineers as they were hitting on all cylinders in their 56-21 win over Kamiak at Goddard Stadium on Friday night.

The Knights spent most of the time on offense with using their quick-strike passing attack, which also led to the first touchdown of the game, a 25-yard scoring pass.

Barksdale

Mount Baker countered with a perfectly executed play-action pass that saw junior quarterback Tyson Barksdale find a wide open Noah Nicol-Mills for a 19-yard touchdown, and it was tied 7-7 after one quarter of play.

The Mounties took the lead when junior running back Enoc Smith zigged and zagged his way to a 25-yard touchdown scamper, but a one-yard scoring plunge by Kamiak tied the game once again.

Senior running back Andrew Monteith then scored on a 4-yard run, the first varsity touchdown of his career. He liked it so much, that he scored twice more and finished with 63 yards on 11 carries.

Nicol-Mills scored his second touchdown of the game just before halftime, and he led all players with 99 yards rushing on 11 carries.

Kamiak wouldn’t be denied in the second half, and a short pitch-and-catch by the Knights would end up covering 74 yards, but it would be the final touchdown of the game for the 4A home team.

Monteith

Barksdale nearly matched him on the next possession as he hit senior Gage Smith on a 73-yard touchdown pass. Barksdale finished with a career-high 173 yards passing on the night.

Sophomore Juan Mapes found the end zone in the fourth quarter for Mount Baker, which finished the game with 465 yards of offense on 47 plays.

Senior defensive tackle Aaron Torres had another strong game defensively as he led his team with 8.5 tackles including a quarterback sack. Senior defensive end Kell Reardon added eight tackles, two sacks and a pass batted down at the line of scrimmage.

The Mountaineers (2-1) will be on the road for the third consecutive week on Friday as they will travel to Omak (2-1) to face the Pioneers at 6:00.
