SEATTLE – The Pioneers were unfazed by the fast start by King’s who scored two touchdowns in the first three minutes of the game, as they put the gas pedal down and exploded for a 51-21 win over the Knights at Woolsey Stadium on Friday night.
Even though Nooksack Valley received the opening kickoff, a dropped pass on the second play from scrimmage caused the ball to fly into the air and into the arms of a King’s defender. The Knights then picked up a few first downs and then scored.
The ensuing kickoff was bobbled, and King’s recovered the ball, and promptly scored once again.
The game was completely different after that point.
A pair of physical 15-yard runs by junior running back Trey Heutink set the tone on the next drive, and he was rewarded at the end of it with a 1-yard touchdown to get the Pioneers on the board.
In the second quarter it was junior Treven Scheenstra, who played the lightning to Heutink’s earlier thunder, and he was able to scamper into the endzone from 15 yards out. Evan Leyerly’s extra point tied the game at 14-14.
After forcing a King’s punt, the Pioneers then put together a quick three-play drive that ended with a quick screen pass to the sideline from sophomore quarterback Lucas Woodrich to junior wide receiver Tyler Martin who then went 11 yards for the score.
A fumble recovery deep in Knights territory just before halftime allowed the Pioneers to attempt a 21-yard field goal, which was good by Leyerly, and Nooksack Valley was up 24-14 at the half.
King’s opened up the second half with a 57-yard touchdown pass, which cut the Pioneer lead to just three points, but it wouldn’t be that way for long as Woodrich floated a pass over two defenders and into the arms of Scheenstra who galloped 35 yards for a touchdown.
A diving interception by Leyerly on the following possession gave the ball back to Nooksack Valley, and a 50-yard run by Heutink set up Scheenstra’s third touchdown of the game, a 6-yard run.
A deep pass by the Knights was tipped by senior cornerback Jaden Jones, and intercepted by Martin. It was his second interception of the game, and his fourth of the season.
Nooksack Valley then went to a double-tight, two-back offense, and as the final quarter approached, Heutink was able to cross the goal line from three yards out. He finished with a team-high 134 yards on 12 carries.
The Pioneers snagged their fourth interception of the game on the next drive when Jones picked the ball off, and the Pioneers also turned that turnover into points as Scheenstra took a pitch to the left, followed a lead block from Heutink, and rambled 35 yards for his fourth touchdown of the game.
Scheenstra finished with 122 yards on 15 carries.
King’s had one last drive, but were unable to come up with points against Nooksack Valley’s backup defenders.
The Pioneers (3-0) will host Squalicum (1-2) on Friday at 7:00.
