BELLEVUE – It took a lot of guts for the Lyncs to schedule a game against perennial powerhouse Bellevue, and they showed a lot of guts as the trailed just 21-9 in the third quarter before the Wolverines ran away with the 42-9 victory at home on Friday night.
After allowing a touchdown, Lynden Christian was able to get on the board when junior kicker Jackson Yun booted a 30-yard field goal. It was his Whatcom County leading fourth field goal of the season.
The LC momentum was short-lived as the Wolverines then returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to make it 14-3, and Bellevue scored once more before the end of the first half.
The Lyncs moved the ball well to begin the third quarter as they used power running from senior Chris Kooiman, as well as some nifty scrambles from senior quarterback Dawson Hintz. The drive culminated in a 4-yard touchdown pass from Hintz to his 6-foot-4 senior tight end Kaden Veldman.
Unfortunately, that would be as close as the score got from there on out as Bellevue scored twice more on the ground, and also scored on a 27-yard fumble return.
Kooiman led Lynden Christian on the ground with 77 yards on 19 carries, and senior tight end Justin Kuik and Veldman each caught five passes.
Defensively, Hintz led his team with eight tackles, including a tackle for loss.
The Lyncs (2-1) will be back home on Saturday when they host LaCenter (3-0) at 2:00.
