Nooksack Valley Ends Its Season With Road Win

MARYSVILLE – Unable to find an opponent for next week, the Pioneers went on the road to Quil Ceda Stadium on Friday night knowing that this would be their final game of the season. They made it count with a 21-7 win over Marysville-Pilchuck.

It didn’t come easy as penalties as turnovers marred the first half as both teams went into the locker room tied at 7-7, despite Nooksack Valley outgaining the Tomahawks 112 to 36 in yards from scrimmage to that point.

Heutink

Marysville-Pilchuck recovered an onside kick to start the game, intercepted a pass in the end zone, and also intercepted pass in the second quarter, which was returned deep into Pioneer territory.

Despite all of this, Nooksack Valley still scored first with a 5-yard touchdown run by junior running back Trey Heutink. The Pioneers dug deep into their bag of tricks on the play before as they threw a lateral across the field to senior left tackle Trevek McMillen who then darted through the defense for a 20-yard gain.

Heutink finished with 109 yards on 13 carries to lead Nooksack Valley.

The Pioneers started the second half by returning the favor and kicking an onside kick of their own, which was recovered by sophomore Ethan Steed.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Pioneers were able to find the end zone twice in the final quarter of their season.

Ackerman

An interception by sophomore cornerback Evan Leyerly set up their first touchdown drive of the second half, which ended with a three-yard run up the middle by sophomore quarterback Lucas Woodrich.

The final touchdown came when 6-foot-3 225-pound senior tight end Dane Ackerman took the direct snap from the 1-yard line and plowed his way into the end zone.

Senior linebacker Eli King led the Pioneers with seven tackles.

Nooksack Valley’s season came to a close with a record of 6-3.
