Golden Eagles Win One, Lose One At State

YAKIMA – Ferndale got off to a great start by defeating Stadium 3-1 in the first round of the 3A state volleyball tournament. After losing the first set, 28-26, the Golden Eagles dominated the next three sets, 25-14, 25-10 and 25-10.

5-foot-11 senior Nicole Headrick had 15 kills, 14 digs, six aces and four blocks. Fellow senior Malia Honrud had 41 assists, and sophomore Kaelee Bungard had 12 kills to go along with her 16 digs.

Ferndale couldn’t get the victory in the second round against Roosevelt, but played extremely well and won the third set after losing the first two by a combined six points. However, the Golden Eagles dropped the fourth set 25-21.

Headrick came up big in the power game with 20 kills. Honrud had 40 assists and five blocks, and sophomore Alyvia Semu had six kills, five aces, five blocks and five digs.

Ferndale (15-4) will take on Lakeside (12-12) tomorrow at 9:00 am where the winner will play for fifth place.
