The Pioneers batted around in the bottom of the first inning, and put up five runs, and they held a three-run lead through the first four innings. The Trojans then made it interesting in the fifth when Trey Alexander doubled to the wall. Alexander and Kasyon Culp then came around to score on an error to make it a one-run game. Pierce Brzozowski promptly singled and eventually scored on a fielder’s choice, and it was a new ball game. Nooksack Valley junior Trevek McMillen led off the bottom of the sixth with a sharp double down the left field line, and eventually scored on a sacrifice bunt from senior Crew Bauman. Down by one in the top of the seventh, Brzozowski led off the inning with a walk, took second base on a wild pitch and then advanced to third on an error. Nate Payne was then hit by a pitch, and balk allowed Brzozowski to score which tied the game at 6-6 with nobody out in the top of the inning. An infield hit by Gabe Galbraith allowed Payne to score and Meridian took a 7-6 lead. A sacrifice and two strikeouts later, the Pioneers were able to get out of the inning and went into the bottom of the seventh down by one. Payne was still on the mound for Meridian, and had been dialed in after a tough first inning, but he was also nearing 100 pitches. He was able to get the first two batters out, but then walked Landen Stauffer and Lucas Woodrich on eight straight pitches. Still with two outs, he just needed one more out to win the game. A wild pitch allowed Stauffer and Woodrich to each advance 90 feet. McMillen then hit a two-hopper up the middle which was fielded cleanly, but the throw to first base was mishandled, and both runners came around to win the game for the Pioneers.
