DEMING – The Mountaineers picked up right where they left off last season as they rattled off 49 first half points on their way to a 56-6 win over Port Angeles at Bob Tisdale Field on Friday night.
On the first play from scrimmage, Mount Baker used their patented counter run to the right which saw senior left tackle Kell Reardon pull through the hole and engage a block 10 yards down field, which he continued for the next 13 yards. It helped spring senior Noah Nicol-Mills for a 79-yard touchdown and the Mounties were up early.
The Roughriders crossed midfield on their first drive, but were ultimately forced to punt, and Mount Baker took over on their own 21-yard line once again. Big runs by seniors Andrew Monteith and Gage Smith, coupled with a 16-yard pass play from junior quarterback Tyson Barksdale to Nicol-Mills were key plays in the drive, which ultimately set up the Mountaineers’ second touchdown of the quarter, a 4-yarder by Nicol-Mills.
Port Angeles was forced to punt once again, after a third-down pass was knocked away by junior defensive back Jayden Nicol-Mills, and sophomore defensive end Trey Galbraith broke through the line to block the punt, which was picked up by senior linebacker Gunner McGrath who scored a touchdown.
Mount Baker kept its momentum in the second quarter as junior safety Enoc Smith intercepted a pass near midfield, and returned it all the way to the 1-yard line, where Noah Nicol-Mills promptly scored his third touchdown of the game.
Enoc Smith then showed his prowess running the ball by darting through the defense for 35 yards before crossing the goal line. That was followed by a quick-hitting 33-yard touchdown run up the middle by sophomore running back Juan Mapes, as well as a 5-yard touchdown run by Galbraith, which gave a the Mounties a 49-0 lead at the half.
The backups continued to play well for Mount Baker into the third quarter, and a play-action pass from Galbraith to junior tight end Pepe McEvoy-Salgado covered 39 yards and went for the final Mountaineer score of the game.
The Roughriders were able to get into the endzone halfway through the fourth quarter.
Mount Baker totaled 348 yards rushing, with 11 different players carrying the ball.
The defense was led by numerous players, with Reardon, along with junior defensive linemen Sylis Maple and Ramsey Mitchell bringing down the quarterback. Senior Pedro Ruelas-George forced a fumble, and Jayden Nicol-Mills recovered the fumble, and he led his team with five tackles.
The Mountaineers (1-0) will travel to North Kitsap (1-0) on Friday to take on the Vikings at 7:00.
