LYNDEN – When the Sultan Turks rolled into Rollie DeKoster field on Friday night, they were greeted with a not so friendly welcome to the Northwest Conference from the Lynden Lions. The Lions held the Turks out of the endzone as they took the win 49-0 in their first conference game of the season.
It was a slow start to the game but Lynden senior wide receiver Sam Arango quickly turned that around catching an 11-yard pass to set himself up for the first touchdown of the game. Arango then hauled in a 35-yard catch from junior quarterback Austin Postma and walked backwards into the endzone for the initial score.
Senior defensive end Cayden Brown knocked the ball loose from the Sultan quarterback on the ensuing drive and junior defensive lineman Jack Williams jumped on it. Suddenly, Lynden had all the momentum and wasn’t holding back.
The Lions, who had been playing a two-quarterback scheme all night, stayed hot on offense. Senior quarterback Gordy Bedlington punched the ball in from a yard out to start the second quarter and four minutes later Postma did the same, extending the Lions lead to 21-0 with eight minutes to go in the first half.
It was senior tight end Lincoln Van Ry who got a piece of the wealth when Bedlington found him for a 22-yard score in the west end zone to make it 28-0.
Postma then decided to change things up and get some excitement flowing on defense, as he jumped underneath a Turks pass and ran the ball back 64 yards for a pick-six.
The Lions headed to their locker room up 35-0 at the half.
With only two and half minutes taken off the second half running clock, Postma collected his third touchdown of the night. He raced 18 yards and over the goal line to make it 42-0 before Lynden gave way for their second-team guys to take the field.
The result in doing that was a third Lynden quarterback finding the endzone. Sophomore Jace Baseden found a gap around the right side of his offense line, showed some nifty moves and extended the score to 49-0.
If the coffin hadn’t already been sealed, Lions junior defensive back Austin Peas made sure it was when he snagged a Turks pass out of the air with less than two minutes of game clock left.
Lynden let the final seconds run off the clock and cement the final score 49-0.
The Lions (1-0) will travel to Lakewood (0-1) on Friday to take on the Cougars at 7:00.
