It was a wonderful pitching duel between two senior aces, until the bottom of the fifth inning when Golden Eagle errors were beginning to mount up and the Borderites took advantage by pushing across all five of their runs. Catcher Evan Yates drove in two runs on with his team’s lone hit of the game. In a game of twists and turns, the Pioneers held an 8-2 lead after four innings, but the Mariners rattled off eight runs of their own in the following two innings before Nooksack Valley scored three runs in the seventh inning to win the game. Down by one, with two outs in the top of the seventh and the bases loaded, sophomore Evan Brown hit a double to left field which scored Kasey Newton and Colby Martin, which ultimately turned into the game-winning hit. Newton led his team with three hits, including his county-leading third triple of the season, and he also picked up the win in relief as he struck out three batters in just under two innings. Perfection. It doesn’t come along very often, but last night included perhaps the greatest pitching performance in Whatcom County history. Junior Jonah Aase pitched a perfect game, and struck out 17 of the 18 batters he faced. Squalicum’s Josh Kreta was the only player to put the ball in play, a pop-out to Lincoln Hoefer at first base. The game was scoreless after four innings, but the Trojans blasted out eight runs in the fifth inning. Meridian left fielder Tyson Timmer led his team with three runs batted in while freshman shortstop Pierce Brzozowski led with three hits.

The Mountaineers pushed across three runs in the top of the fifth inning, but the Cougars were too powerful as they scored in every inning before claiming the victory at home. L: Sternhagen (0-1)

MB: Rightmire 1-3, 3B, R; Hesyck 2 RBI.
