SULTAN – It was a close battle throughout the night, but the Turks made big plays late to take the victory at home against the Mariners 31-21 on Friday night.
Sehome opened up the scoring with a 34-yard scoring strike from Jad Geiger to Gunnar Anderson, and led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Sultan then used its size advantage to push the ball down the field with a strong run game, and finished the drive with a 15-yard touchdown run.
On the Turk’s next possession they were forced to punt, but a bad snap allowed Sehome to pick up terrific field position, which was quickly turned into a 15-yard touchdown pass from Geiger to senior wide receiver Nicky Smith.
Sultan was able to reach the endzone once more before the half, but were unable to score on the two-point conversion and the Mariners led 14-12 at the half.
Geiger and Anderson hooked up again in the third quarter, this time for a 13-yard touchdown pass, which extended Sehome’s lead to 21-12. However, the game of back-and-forth continued as the Turks answered with a 31-yard touchdown run.
The Mariners were then forced to punt, but a snap over the punter’s head gave Sultan great field position, much like had happened earlier in the game to the opposition. The Turks then scored on a 12-yard touchdown pass which gave the home team the lead for the first time in the game, 25-21, halfway through the fourth quarter.
Sehome had a decent drive going late in the game, but a completed pass on fourth down from Geiger to Anderson was ruled a yard short of the first down marker. A few plays later, on what looked like a broken play, the Turks were able to complete a 38-yard pass for a touchdown, which extended the lead to 10 points.
The Mariners were able to get back into the red zone but couldn’t convert.
Sehome’s defense was led by senior linebacker Evan Hatzl who finished with a team-high nine tackles and a tackle for loss, and senior defensive lineman Logan Rogers who had seven tackles, with three of them coming behind the line of scrimmage.
The Mariners (0-3) will host Lakewood (0-3) at 7:00 on Friday at Civic Stadium.
