OMAK – Even though they turned the ball over four times, the Mountaineers were still able to keep the Pioneers off the scoreboard in their 41-0 non-conference win on Friday night.
Over Mount Baker’s last eight games, going back to last season, this was third time that the Mountaineers have faced Omak, and it was the third win. The Mounties averaged nearly 10 yards per run and put over 300 yards rushing behind one of the best offensive line performances of the season.
Leading the way was senior Andrew Monteith who posted his first career 100-yard performance with 138 yards on 15 carries, and it was mostly his work that allowed Mount Baker to drive down the field and score the first touchdown of the game, a one-yard sneak by junior quarterback Tyson Barksdale.
Senior running back Noah Nicol-Mills also got into the scoring action with a 31-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
The third Mountaineer touchdown came when Barksdale threw a 27-yard strike to junior tight end Pepe McEvoy-Salgado early in the second quarter, and junior running back Enoc Smith finished the first half scoring barrage with 4-yard touchdown run.
Mount Baker’s defense came up big all evening as it had nine stops behind the line of scrimmage, with senior defensive tackle Aaron Torres leading the way with two of them. Senior cornerback Zyan Paglia finished with a team-high nine tackles, and Torres was close behind with 8.5.
Senior Gage Smith also had a big game, as he made a switch from safety to cornerback, and he finished with two interceptions, one of which he returned 44 yards. Senior linebacker Isaac DeKriek also intercepted a pass, had six tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and forced a fumble.
Enoc Smith scored twice more in the second half, and he finished with 70 yards on the ground on just eight carries.
The Mountaineers (3-1) will play their final non-conference game of the season next week when they host Onalaska (3-1) on Saturday at 1:00.
