NOOKSACK – After 20 years, Robb Myhre has decided to step down as the varsity football coach for the Nooksack Valley Pioneers.

He leaves with more wins than any other coach in school history (107), including five trips to the state playoffs and a semi-final appearance in the 2009 season.

Myhre graduated from Nooksack Valley in 1988, and was an All-League 1st Team selection at linebacker in both his junior and senior seasons. He went on to play defensive end at Western Washington University.

Shortly after that, he started student teaching at Lynden and became an assistant coach for Nooksack Valley in 1993, and had been with the Pioneer football program ever since, coaching at different levels.

In his first year as an assistant with the Pioneers he had two players, senior T.J. Ackerman and junior Britt Lentz, that would both go on to star at Eastern Washington University, and eventually return back to coach under Myhre, after Robb was hired to be the varsity head coach in 2000. Ackerman and Lentz were his two longest tenured coaches, and both remained coaching through this past season.

“He’s one of the best human beings walking the planet,” Ackerman said in a text message. “We’ll see what comes next…. gonna miss that dude.”

In a Facebook post on the Pioneer Football Players page, Myhre gave is range of emotions of sadness, relief, anger, disappointment, and joy.

On a personal note, I’m glad to be able to call Coach Myhre a friend. He’s always been so thoughtful with his time, and his willingness to speak to me about his team. He’s one of my favorites, and I’m hopeful that I can stay in touch with him.
