BLAINE – The weather may have been great for some Saturday afternoon football but the result wasn’t so great for the Blaine Borderites, who took a 20-0 loss on their home turf against the King’s Knights.
The score was 6-0 with King’s ahead before the Borderites would get their first possession. Blaine wouldn’t get much going but were able to pin the Knights deep after junior Connor Brown’s 60-yard punt was stopped at the King’s one-yard line.
The Borderite defense found its groove on the ensuing drive and forced King’s to give the ball back around midfield. And, on the Knights next drive, junior linebacker Tandy Heer fell on top of loose ball to pick up a fumble recovery.
Three minutes into the second quarter, Heer stole the ball from the Knights again, stepping in front of a King’s pass attempt and returning it 32 yards, deep into Knights territory.
However, the Borderite offense wasn’t able to capitalize on the defense’s success and fell to 13-0 at the half after the Knights scored again with less than two minutes to go in the second quarter.
Borderite junior defensive back Isaac Bouma came up big for Blaine picking off a pass with 27 seconds to go in the third quarter. But shortly into the final quarter of play, the Knights would find the end zone once again.
The Borderites would find some momentum in the final minutes of game clock and make some moves down field but it wouldn’t be enough to show up on the final scoreboard.
King’s held a decided advantage in the time of possession category, and the top Blaine defenders made their presence known in the stat column.
Junior linebacker Matt Campion had a team-high 15.5 tackles and a tackle for loss. Senior linebacker Axel Shelton added 13 tackles, one tackle for loss and a forced fumble, while senior Peyton Bouma had 9.5 stops, one tackle for loss and a pass defended. Junior defensive end Saihou Kanagie also had 8.5 tackles, with three of them coming behind the line of scrimmage.
The Borderites (2-2) will begin conference play on Friday when they host Nooksack Valley (4-0) on Friday at 7:00.
