Knutzen
Gunderson

It’s every pitcher’s dream, and Borderite senior Colby Knutzen accomplished it. A no-hitter. And, this against a very good hitting Golden Eagle team. Blaine jumped out to a big lead early, thanks to a few defensive miscues, and scored seven runs in the first inning. Nothing helps a pitcher more than a big lead to work with. Other than two walks and a hit batsman, Knutzen was perfect on the mound. The Borderite offense continued to execute, and helped shorten the game with a 10-run lead after five innings. Knutzen also helped himself offensively with two hits, two runs, a walk, a run batted in and a stolen base. Senior Nick Gunderson knocked in a game-high three runs, while he, Ben Wallen and Hudson Reid each also had a pair of hits.

Squalicum 8, Bellingham 0

Sage
Williams

Squalicum senior hurler Mitchell Sage has been a strike-throwing machine all season, and it continued on Thursday at Joe Martin Field. He threw 81 pitches in a complete game shut out, while only giving up two hits and he didn’t walk anyone. The Storm offense was on early and often, scoring all of their runs in the first four innings. Josh Boysen, Bryce Pennock and Billy Scammell all stung doubles, and the Squalicum base runners were aggressive with six stolen bases. Senior first baseman August Williams has fit into the leadoff role nicely over the past few games, and he did another great job of getting on base. Keenan Patterson scored a pair of runs for Squalicum. The Red Raiders were once again without standout infielder Kyle Payne, who has had a nagging hip injury all season. It appears that he may not be able to play for the remainder of 2019.

Lakewood 5, Nooksack Valley 2

DeWeber
Roosma

Senior pitcher Jacob Roosma pitched a complete game, and junior catcher Levi DeWeber knocked in two runs, but it wasn’t enough to get past the Cougars. Lakewood has been hot since the beginning of conference play, and has yet to lose a conference game. Junior Easton Zylstra also had a pair of hits, and junior Zach Johnson hit a double.

L: Roosma (0-2)

NV: Lackey 1-4, R; Zylstra 2-3, DeWeber 1-2, 2 RBI; Johnson 1-3, 2B, Roosma 1-3.

Anacortes 5, Mount Baker 1

Backstrom
Brown

Three runs in the first inning would have been enough for the Seahawks, as they ended up topping the Mountaineers 5-1. Sophomore Marques Brown struck out four batters in four innings of work, but ultimately took the loss against last season’s conference champions. Senior center fielder Carter Backstrom went 2-for-3 with a double, to bring his batting average up to .476, which is amongst the leaders in Whatcom County. Kaleb Bass knocked in the only run for Mount Baker, and sophomore Andrew Stalnaker pitched a great seventh inning, throwing nine strikes on 12 pitches while striking a batter out.

L: Brown (0-3)

MB: Gomes 1-3; Bass 1-3, RBI; Rosenburg 1-2, Stalnaker 1-3, T. Kentner 1-3; Backstrom 2-3, 2B, R.

Burlington-Edison 4, Lynden Christian 0

Terpstra
Whittern

It’s tough enough to get on base when Tiger senior Isaiah Shetler is pitching, let alone score, and the Lyncs found that out first hand on Thursday. Whatcom County’s leading hitter Shale Whittern was able to get on with a single, and junior Jake Terpstra reached base twice, but the pitching of Shetler was just too much to overcome. Sophomore Luke Johnson suffered his first loss of the season, but still pitched very well. He allowed just two hits, but walked six batters. Terpstra had his best outing of the season on the mound in relief. He allowed just one hit over four innings, and struck out four batters.

L: Johnson (3-1)

LC: Whittern 1-3, SB; Terpstra 1-2, BB.
