The defending 2A state champion Lions had a big task ahead of them to start the new season, as they traveled down the road to take on the ultra-talented Golden Eagles, and they came away with the victory in straight sets, 25-17, 25-16 and 25-17.
Senior Finley Parcher attacked from numerous angles, and powered her way to 17 kills to lead Lynden’s offensive attack.
Senior Lexi Hermanutz led the Lions with 13 digs, while junior Hadley Lamp added 11 digs. Junior Izzie Stephan had a game-high 30 assists, and junior Emma Assink had four aces.
Ferndale was led by senior Brooklyn Larrabee who finished with 24 assists and 14 digs, and senior Svetlana Baydak had a team-high 11 kills to go with her nine digs.
Senior Teia Dube added 10 digs and five kills, while junior Adelle Overson had eight kills and senior Sienna Brionez had a game-high 2.5 blocks.
SEHOME 3, MERIDIAN 0
Despite the sweep, it was a battle throughout the night as the two powerhouse squads that brought home state tournament trophies last season began this season with a terrific match.
The Mariners got the best of the Trojans, 25-23, 25-19 and 25-21, and they were led by the all-around game of junior Radler Rosellison who finished with an incredible 10 aces to go with her 10 kills and seven digs.
Senior libero Jackie Hurley led the back row with 12 digs, and junior Brooklyn Flamer added punch at the net with two blocks and six kills.
Senior outside hitter Paige Flory neared a double-double with 10 kills and eight digs, and junior setter Taylor Turrell added 28 assists, nine digs, two kills and 1.5 blocks.
Meridian was led by junior Melanie Short who flew around the court to the tune of 17 kills and 12 digs.
Senior libero Amelia Koning led her team with 13 digs, and junior setter Kendall Stacy led the Trojans with 27 assists and a pair of aces. Senior outside hitter Eden Bernardy added nine kills and five digs.
SEDRO-WOOLLEY 3, BELLINGHAM 1
The visiting Cubs clawed out to a 2-0 lead after winning the first two sets 25-16 and 25-19, but the Bayhawks rallied to win the third set with a convincing score of 25-14.
Bellingham then played even with Sedro-Woolley in the fourth set, and took a late lead, but the strong outside hitting of the Cubs prevailed in the end as they came back to beat the Bayhawks 25-23 in the fourth set, which clinched the match.
Senior Bailey Burge led Bellingham with 21 digs and five aces, and junior Morgan Brennan finished with 18 assists and 12 digs.
Sophomore Estelle Ochs had a team-high eight kills to go with her 11 digs and three aces, and sophomore Audrey Riehl was strong at the net as she registered six kills and 2.5 blocks.
