1A District Tournament:
-
Blaine 2, Mount Baker 1 ( 3-2 PK’s)
-
Blaine 2, Mount Baker 1
After splitting the regular season matchups, the two teams kicked off the 1A district tournament with a loser-out game at Blaine High School.
Borderite senior Kate Koreski put her team on the scoreboard with a goal less than six minutes into the contest. The score remained 1-0 throughout the first half, and well into the second half until Mountaineer sophomore Maci Kammenga scored about 20 minutes into the second half.
After two scoreless five-minute overtime periods, it came down to penalty kicks. After both teams missed their respective opening shots, the next four shots were made, making it 2-2 in penalty kicks. Both team’s fourth shots were missed, which put all the pressure on the final shot takers of both teams, as well as the goalkeepers.
Blaine sophomore forward Ruby Belarmino knocked in her shot to give Blaine the one-goal lead, and it all came down to one final kick. When senior goalkeeper Marcella Bring made the diving save, it kept the Borderites’ season alive as they will now go on to face top-seeded Meridian at 7:00 on Wednesday at Blaine High School.
Mount Baker’s season came to a close with a record of 5-10.
