BELLINGHAM – Led by sophomore singles star, Zach Chai, the Mariners fared extremely well at the Northwest District boys tennis tournament over the weekend.

Chai cruised through the tournament without losing a set, and defeated his teammate Nathan Gruman 6-1, 6-3 in the championship match. Chai will head to state for the second year in a row, and he will try to improve on his sixth place finish from last year as just a freshman.

Gruman bounced back from losing the championship match to defeat Bellingham sophomore star Jacob Kuhn 6-2, 6-1 for the second state berth. This will be Gruman’s first trip to state in this his senior season.

On the doubles side, Sehome seniors Whitt Gresham and Calvin Kraynak defeated Matthew Rutz and Sawyer Nichols of Anacortes 6-1, 6-1 to take the second seed to the state tournament. Rutz and Nichols made it to state last year, but were defeated twice in this year’s district tournament by the Sehome duo.

The state tournament will take place in Seattle on May 26th and 27th.
