STANWOOD – The Golden Eagles went on the road to Bob Larson Stadium to face the undefeated Spartans, and Stanwood stayed undefeated after defeating Ferndale 31-7 on Friday night.
All of the talk this week was about the explosive Spartan offense, and for good reason as they threw for 253 yards and four touchdowns, but it was their defense that came up huge in this one.
Stanwood’s defense limited the big plays, and held the Golden Eagles to 131 yards of total offense.

Senior running back Elliot Lenssen had 80 of those yards on the ground, but it was the first time this season that he was held under 160 yards. He was also held out of the end zone for the first time this season.
Meanwhile, the Spartan offense was able to pick up key first downs, sometimes on fourth-down plays, and they finished drives on long touchdown passes.
Ferndale senior fullback Wyatt Broyles scored on a nine-yard touchdown run on the final Golden Eagle play from scrimmage. He finished with 53 yards on 10 carries.
Senior defensive back Brock Heuck led the Golden Eagle defense with 7.5 tackles, while they also got tackles behind the line of scrimmage from Lenssen, Chance Hatchett and Mason Butenschoen.
Ferndale (5-2) will try to get back on track on Friday at Sedro-Woolley (5-2) when they take on the Cubs at 7:00.
