FOOTBALL

2016 Season

As just a sophomore, he quickly fit in to a team loaded with senior talent.

As a wide receiver in week one he caught two passes for 22 yards, and exploded on the road in week two at Meridian. Against the Trojans he caught five passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns. All were season highs.

He caught another touchdown pass the following week against Sedro-Woolley, but in a losing effort.

He continued his consecutive game streak of catching multiple passes against Bellingham and Anacortes, before catching just one pass for 19 yards at Lynden. He ended up getting injured in the game, and sat out the second half.

He came back at the end of the season to catch a pass against Burlington-Edison, and a touchdown pass against Liberty in a post season contest.

He finished the season second on the team in receptions and receiving touchdowns. In fact, his five receiving touchdowns were the fourth most in school history by a sophomore (Josiah Westbrook, Joey Paciorek and Anthony Ball.)

To help keep Blaine’s postseason hopes alive late in the year, Abshere had big games with a touchdown catch against Cedarcrest, as well as seven catches for a career-high 185 yards and two touchdowns against Anacortes.

His final reception came in a play-in game at Civic Stadium against Lynden.

2016-17 Season

In Abshere’s one year of varsity basketball, his sophomore season, the Borderites struggled through the season with a 5-14 record.

Bright spots came when he had big shooting nights.

One of them came early in the season when he hit his fix six 3-point attempts to give Blaine a big lead early, as they held on to defeat Nooksack Valley 82-54. He finished with 20 points in the game.

Another moment came late in the season when the Borderites hosted Sedro-Woolley. The Cubs won 66-49, but Blaine was led by Abshere’s 16 points.

BASEBALL

2016 Season

It may have appeared that a lot of pressure was put onto Abshere as a freshman, but baseball was his main sport, and when he was batting third in the lineup from day one, it didn’t hinder his growth at all.

His first career hit came in the second game of the season, a triple, against Ferndale in a 5-3 loss.

In the next game he doubled against Lynden, as he quickly showed that he belonged.

He scored two of his teams’ three runs in a 3-2 victory over Squalicum, and then had two hits against Nooksack Valley.

He smacked a 2-run double in the next game against Lynden Christian, which gave the Borderites the lead for good, and he followed that up with 3-run double against Coupeville.

He had a three-hit game against Bellingham, and another three-hit game against Mount Baker.

He then had a mini-slump, but broke out of it with two hits against Burlington-Edison, and late in the season he was moved to the leadoff spot and he immediately responded by going 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and three runs batted in against Anacortes.

A run in the post season ended against Fife, as the Borderites finished 15-10 on the season.

2017 Season

As a sophomore, he was cemented into the leadoff spot from day one, and he enjoyed his best offensive season.

In game one he had two hits and four runs batted in against Meridian as the Borderites got off to a hot start.

After going hitless in game three against Nooksack Valley, Abshere went on a tear and had an 11-game hitting streak in which he batted .476 (20-for-42), with three doubles, five triples and his first varsity home run.

The Borderites also won nine games in a row in that stretch.

He also ended the season on a seven-game hitting streak, including going 4-for-4 in a 4-2 loss against Burlington-Edison.

Blaine ended the season with a 17-5 record, and Abshere was named All-NWC 1st Team.

2018 Season

In what could be considered a down season for Abshere, was still pretty strong as far as the rest of the conference was concerned.

The Borderites got off to a slow start, and sported a 3-6 record at the halfway mark. Abshere had also missed a few games due to injury, but had only struck out one time in 24 at bats.

Blaine quickly got things turned around, and picked up a huge home win late in the season against Lynden, 5-3.

The Borderites went 8-4 down the stretch to finish the season 11-10. Abshere hit his third career home run, led his team in singles and was third on the team in hits and runs batted in.

2019 Season

Abshere did a little bit of everything during his senior season, playing some outfield, some third base, and even caught some games throughout the season.

In the first game, he went 1-for-4 with an RBI in a 5-4 victory over Squalicum.

He picked up another hit and run batted in game two against Mariner, a 4-1 win.

He caught in game three against Archbishop Murphy, and even though the Borderites suffered their first loss of the season, he went 3-for-4 at the plate with a stolen base and a run scored.

The Blaine bats erupted with a 14-2 win over Nooksack Valley at home, with Abshere hitting a double and a triple along with scoring two runs and knocking in two runs.

The Borderites scored five runs in the first inning against Anacortes, and held on for a 5-4 win. Abshere got a base hit and scored in the first inning.

After the first two weeks of the season, he was second in the county in triples, fifth in hits and eighth in slugging percentage.

He began the month of April with a big game against Bellingham, going 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs, two RBI’s and a stolen base in an 11-0 win.

He closed out the first half of the season with a 3-for-3 outing against Squalicum in a 6-3 win.

At the halfway mark Blaine had a 7-3 record, 4-1 in the conference, and Abshere was sporting a .412 batting average.

Still playing at the 2A level at the time, other teams like Anacortes, Burlington-Edison and Lynden also had a 4-1 conference record, and Sedro-Woolley was undefeated conference mark. Just getting to the postseason was going to be a grind.

The Borderites took care of Lakewood, 10-0, with Abshere responsible for four of those runs.

Blaine began to slide late, and lost 6-4 to Mount Baker at home, in a game in which Abshere didn’t play, but bounced back with a 10-0 win over Meridian.

With an 11-8 record, the Borderites defeated Mountlake Terrace 3-0 at home in a “win or go home” contest.

Blaine unfortunately lost its two games in the district tournament and bowed out. The Borderites finished 12-10

Abshere finished the season leading his team in doubles and triples, and was second on the team in hits and runs batted in. He was also named All-Conference 1st Team for the second time.

Baseball Career

It was one of the best careers in recent memory for any Whatcom County baseball player. A true leader that would play any position to help his team win. I’m still researching this particular stat, but he might be the only athlete in Whatcom County history to have 100 base hits and 100 receptions in his high school career. He went on to Skagit Valley College to play baseball.
