Mount Baker 21, Meridian 16

The Mountaineers scored six in the first, and six more in the third inning, but the Trojans wouldn’t go away as the two teams battled every inning, knowing that it could possibly be their final game of the season. In the end, Mount Baker was able to hold of Meridian and move on to the second round of the 1A district tournament. Senior catcher Zaida Haynes led her team with five hits and five runs batted in, while senior Cadence Cloninger added four hits, four runs driven in and five runs scored. Freshman Mila LoPresti added four hits, sophomore Ella Horsmon scored three runs and senior Maddi Lewis drove in three runs. The Trojans were led by sophomore Gretchen Zandstra and freshman Piper Ruzicka who each had three hits. Meridian’s season came to a close with a record of 5-14.

Nooksack Valley 12, Mount Baker 2

The Pioneers proved to be too much for the Mountaineers as they ousted Mount Baker from the 1A tournament after five innings of play. Senior pitcher Payton Bartl went the distance for Nooksack Valley and she struck out eight batters while allowing six hits. Senior Grace DeHoog doubled and drove in three runs to help lead the offense, along with sophomore Ellie McKissick who singled, doubled, stole two bases and scored twice. The Mountaineers got a pair of hits from senior Zaida Haynes and freshman Mila LoPresti, while freshman Jaydn DeRoco and eighth grader Ruby Adkinson each reached base twice with a single and a walk. The Pioneers will move on to the Bi-District tournament that will be played at Fort Borst Park in Centralia on Friday and Saturday, and they will be joining Lynden Christian and Blaine as well as the top teams from District 4. Mount Baker’s season came to an end with a record of 5-15.

Stanwood 3, Lynden Christian 1

Knowing they wouldn’t play again until late next week at the Bi-District tournament, the Lyncs were able to schedule a non-conference road game against the 3A Spartans, and nearly pulled out the victory. Lynden Christian tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth when Alivia Brink singled home Jaydn DeRuyter, but Stanwood was able to re-take the lead in the bottom of the inning on a two-run homerun. Kortnee Tolsma led the Lyncs with a pair of hits, and Roxanne Lenning struck out 10 batters in the complete game.
