LYNDEN – The pure dominance that the Lynden Christian volleyball team has possessed over the years is widely known. It is especially known in the Meridian locker room. The last time the Trojans had even won a single set against the Lyncs was 10 years ago, and it didn’t look good on Saturday when LC was up two sets to none.

But, it’s whoever wins three sets first.

Claeys

Meridian fought back to win the third set 25-19, and then tied it up in the fourth set with a close 25-23 victory. Up 15-14 in the fifth and deciding set, the Lyncs were unable to return Finnley Claeys’ serve, and just like that, the Trojans had finally beaten Lynden Christian.

“It was an all around team effort,” said Meridian coach Shannon Claeys. “I am so proud of the way we battled today.”

Flake

Senior outside hitter Makenzie Flake led the Trojans with 18 kills and six aces, while sophomore Finnley Claeys had another great overall performance with 15 kills (.343 hitting percentage), 25 digs and two aces. Junior Brynn Neal chipped in with 17 digs and three aces.

Sophomores Jolena Hoefer (12 kills) and Alofa Fraser (six kills) were very strong offensively, and they were helped out by fellow sophomore Malaysia Smith and her amazing 55 assists! Smith also had 12 digs and two aces. Freshman Joslyn Sipma was strong up front with seven kills and two blocks.

The Trojans (9-5) will close out conference play at home against Lakewood (0-13) on Tuesday. The Lyncs (9-4) will travel to Nooksack Valley (8-5) on Tuesday to take on the Pioneers.
