BELLINGHAM – In an extremely tight contested football game, a big play needed to be the difference. Down by four, with less than two minutes remaining in the game, Redmond went for it on a fourth down play at the Squalicum 43-yard line. Redmond looked to have an open receiver, but out of nowhere came junior defensive end Ceasar Vasquez to put pressure on the quarterback and force the errant throw for an incomplete pass.

A first down run by senior quarterback Spencer Lloyd a play later secured the 14-10 win for the Storm. Lloyd finished with 95 yards rushing on 19 carries. He also fought off two early interceptions thrown to complete five passes for 86 yards. His first completion was a 34-yard touchdown strike to junior wide receiver Devante Powell on a post pattern to tie the game at seven in the second quarter. Lloyd ran in a touchdown from two yards out later in the quarter.

A 31-yard field goal by Redmond would be the only scoring in the second half, when many great special teams plays were made. Squalicum sophomore Billy Scammell recovered the onside kick attempt after the Redmond field goal and junior punter Mason Lloyd made two great punts late in the game. The first was a one-handed grab on the deep snap that almost went over his head, and he was able to get off a 30-yard punt. The second came on a 41-yard blast while punting from deep in his own end zone.

Junior Branden Powers carried the ball 13 times for 50 yards, and he also had numerous tackles on defense, including a big fumble recovery that stalled a long Redmond drive.

Powell led the Strom in receiving with three catches for 55 yards.

Squalicum (1-0) will host Arlington (1-0) in a Wesco North game at Civic Stadium on Friday. The game will also be broadcasted on The Doug Lange Network. Pregame at 6:45, kickoff at 7:00.
