BELLINGHAM – It was the Mariners’ second win of the season, and it was also their second shutout of the season, as Sehome took care of Cedarcrest 44-0 at Civic Stadium on Friday night.
It was a complete effort for the Mariners, with the quick strike offense working to near perfection, as Sehome completed 16-of-19 passes on the evening.
Junior quarterback Carson Neff completed a seven-yard touchdown pass to senior wide out Derrick Heyward in the first quarter, which was quickly followed up by a safety when junior Banning Dirks blocked a punt that went out of the end zone which gave Sehome an early 9-0 lead.
The Mariners connected on two more touchdown passes in the second quarter, a 4-yarder from Neff to sophomore Braddock Duckworth, and 22-yard connection from senior Jovyn Sangha to fellow senior Zach Chisolm with 50 seconds to go until halftime.
Chisolm finished with a game-high 70 yards receiving on five receptions.
Neff scored his team-leading fourth rushing touchdown of the season in the third quarter, and in the fourth quarter junior safety Jackson Dew intercepted a pass and returned a school-record 100 yards for a touchdown. Sangha then threw his second touchdown of the game, this time a 6-yarder to freshman Andre Watson. Sehome also got interceptions from sophomore cornerback Alden Jacobs and junior inside linebacker Malachi Swanson.
The Mariners also got big contributions defensively from Duckworth, who finished with eight tackles, four tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Swanson and junior strong safety Max Malo each registered 7.5 tackles.
Sehome (2-6) will travel to Burlington-Edison (5-2) on Friday at 7:00 to take on the Tigers.
