ROYAL CITY – The Knights looked every bit the top ranked team in the state as they ended Mount Baker’s season with a 55-6 win on Saturday.
After a quick 13-0 lead in the first quarter, Mountie senior Kaleb Bass jarred the ball loose to cause an incompletion on a 4th down play for Royal, but the injury knocked Bass out of the game. It would be the second year in a row with Bass getting injured in the state playoffs for Mount Baker.
Sophomore Mason Jacoby took over, and promptly found Kobee Malone on a slant pattern and the fleet-footed senior took it 43 yards for a touchdown, but that would end up being the only score of the game for Mount Baker.
Royal dominated in all aspects of the game, rushing for 181 yards and passing for 263 more. The Knights scored four touchdowns through the air, three on the ground and one on defense.
Jacoby finished with 149 yards passing, and Malone led Baker with four receptions for 88 yards.
Senior Michael Kentner also finished his career with a good game, catching four passes for 47 yards and blasting two 60-plus yard punts.
Sophomore running back Toby Jefferson led the Mountaineers on the ground with 50 yards on seven carries. Junior Jason Lee ran for 14 yards, totaled 80 yards in kickoff returns and intercepted a pass.
Mount Baker closes out its season with an 8-5 record.
