LYNDEN – It had been five years since the Lynden Lions had taken down a number one but that changed on Friday night. The Lions defeated the top ranked Anacortes Seahawks 41-26 at Rollie DeKoster Field.

It was a slow start but the Seahawks broke through first, scoring on a six-yard touchdown run at the three minute mark of the first quarter.

Postma

From there, Lynden found the momentum. Ten seconds into the second quarter, junior quarterback Austin Postma raced 33 yards to take a 7-6 lead.

Anacortes attempted to respond with a field goal but the partially blocked kick landed in the hands of senior linebacker Adam Holman, who took it 33 yards down field, before a penalty backed it up 10. Postma then struck again, this time on a 3-yard carry, making it 14-6.

The Seahawks fought back on the next drive, scoring on a 17-yard touchdown run to close the halftime score to 14-12.

Things weren’t slowing down heading into the second half. Postma collected the hat trick five minutes into the third quarter with a nine-yard score. Anacortes responded with a 17-yard passing touchdown and the score gap was back to two points.

Bedlington

With about a minute left in the third quarter, Lynden would be forced to punt but the deep punt would end up being a blessing in disguise. The ball came loose on the next play and junior defensive end Matthew Maglione jumped on top of it to give the Lions possession deep in Seahawks territory.

Senior quarterback Gordy Bedlington found senior tight end Lincoln Van Ry for a 10-yard score.

On the ensuing kickoff, the ball popped out again and junior Jack Lovegren fell on it to return the possession to the Lions to start the final quarter of play.

Thirty-seven seconds into the fourth quarter, Postma scurried fourteen yards for his fourth score of the game and the biggest lead of the game at that point 34-19.

Anacortes, however, wasnt’t going to go down that easy and scored on its next drive to close the gap back to within eight points.

But with less than three minutes remaining in the game, Lynden converted a 4th-and-10 and another fourth down in the red zone, allowing Postma to pick up a fifth touchdown on the game from three yards out. It was the first time in school history that a player had scored five rushing touchdowns in a single game.

Van Ry

With 1:55 seconds on the game clock, the Seahawks were facing a fourth down of their own and attempted a pass towards the left sideline and Lions senior defensive back Sam Arango intercepted the ball, and ran it back the other direction.

One first down and a victory formation kneel later, the Lions would secure the top spot in the conference with the 41-26 win.

The Lions (5-1) will host Burlington-Edison (4-2) at 7:00 on Friday.
