BELLINGHAM – If someone were to tell me that a Mount Baker player ran 18 times for 108 yards and four touchdowns against Meridian on Friday night, I would respond with, “Wow, Jason Lee had a heck of a game!”. Nope, try again. “That senior, Sam Barrett, huh? He’s a hard runner, way to pick up those big yards up the middle!” Nope, not him either. “Ohhh, it was that sophomore, Toby Jefferson! he’s going to be really good!” Nope, not him either. “Did they move the speedy Kobee Malone to the backfield?” Nope.

Bass

How about Mount Baker three-year starting quarterback Kaleb Bass. He had a tremendous game, as he led the Mounties to a 41-20 win over Meridian at Trojans Field.

Barrett was the first Baker player to score in the game, and it was on a 2-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, which was set up by a forced fumble by Malone that Michael Kentner recovered in Trojan territory.

Bass scored his first two touchdowns before half time, where the Mountaineers found themselves with a 20-0 lead. But, this was familiar territory for the boys in black. They were down by a pair of scores early against Nooksack Valley last week, and they were able to come back. But, this time, it just wasn’t in the cards for Meridian.

Baker’s pursuit on defense was relentless, holding the Trojans to just 47 yards rushing on 20 attempts. The defense also sacked Logan six times, with junior outside linebacker Waylon Kentner getting two of them on the same drive.

Lee broke off a 47-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, which was followed up by Bass’ third touchdown of the game, a 25-yarder that looked very improvisational.

Logan went to the air in the final quarter and a half, and he connected on touchdown passes with Josh Neeter, Dylan Hickok and Cameron Webster. The Mountaineers outgained the Trojans in total yards, 348-194.

Mount Baker (3-2) will travel to Nooskack Valley (3-2) to take on the Pioneers on Friday night, and Meridian (3-2) will travel to Lynden Christian (5-0) to take on the undefeated Lyncs on Friday night.
