BELLINGHAM – Both teams suffered narrow defeats in week one, and neither team imagined they would start the 2018 season 0-2. The Mountaineers came out firing, as they jumped all over Sehome, taking a 30-0 lead before halftime, and winning the game 44-19 at Civic Stadium on Saturday night.

Bass

After both teams traded punt in the first quarter, Mount Baker junior running back scored his first touchdown of the season on a 13-yard run behind the left side of his offensive line. After an encroachment penalty, Baker decided to go for a two-point conversion that Lee ran in. Once the Mountaineers got the ball back, senior quarterback Kaleb Bass found a wide-open Kobee Malone down the middle of the field, as they connected on a 73-yard touchdown play.

Bass would follow his center, Braeden Shannon, into the end zone on a one-yard QB sneak in the second quarter. The Mariners would end up moving the ball a little bit, but eventually had to punt. However, the Sehome defense forced a Baker punt right away. Unfortunately, for Sehome, the punt was fumbled and Baker recovered on the Mariner 13-yard line. Bass found 6-foot-3 senior wide receiver Michael Kentner on the very next play, and just like that it was 30-0.

Lee

Sehome played the Mountaineers pretty even the rest of the way. Dylan Roberts led the way on the ground for the Mariners, picking up 118 yards on 19 carries. Sophomore quarterback Jacob Kaepernick got his throws in, completing 20-of-35 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown. He would also score two more TD’s on the ground.

Baker totaled 240 yards on the ground, and was efficient through the air completing five passes for 160 yards.

Senior fullback Sam Barrett scored a 4-yard touchdown just before the half, and Bass scored his second touchdown of the game in the third quarter, again following Shannon into the end zone.

Turnovers also played a major role, not withstanding the muffed punt. Lee was able to pick off Kaepernick early on after the ball was tipped, and defensive lineman Adam Harrington snagged the ball out of the air after Kentner got his mitts up high in the air to block a Kaepernick pass. Senior linebacker Jay Allen was also able to strip the ball away on a big gain by Sehome, which was recovered by Malone and advanced 18 yards.

Sehome senior wide receiver Brett Meggyesy caught eight passes for 92 yards.

Mount Baker (1-1) will host Cascade (Leavenworth) (2-0) on Friday night, and the Mariners (0-2) will travel to Centralia (0-2) on Friday.
