Squalicum's Ireland Eaton and Grace Schroder after the big win.

BELLINGHAM – The Squalicum girls soccer team became the first team in the Northwest Conference to reach five wins, and it happened against a very strong Red Raider, as it beat Bellingham 2-1 at Squalicum High School on Tuesday night.

The Storm jumped out to a 1-0 advantage on a spectacular goal that was scored by senior Ireland Eaton. She went about 65 yards, and took on three Bellingham defenders on the way.

“I definitely knew I was going to score at that point,” said Eaton who was celebrating her 18th birthday. “I was going straight to goal.”

Squalicum scored shortly thereafter on a header by sophomore Grace Schroder, who was playing a different position for the first time.

“We all worked super hard as a team tonight,” Schroder said. “Playing a new position (outside forward) was different at first, but once I got the hang of it, it felt really good.”

Storm senior Miranda Rodriguez kept the shut out until about halfway through the second half when Bellingham scored on a penalty kick.

“The girls have been playing really well,” Squalicum coach Jose Rodriguez said. “We had a little bit of a speed bump earlier in the season, in our second game. We’re starting to come more and more together as a team, and we’re taking care of the little things which allows everything else to take care of itself.”

The Storm (5-1) will host Lakewood (1-2-3) on Thursday night at Squalicum High School, and the Red Raiders (3-2-1) will host Blaine (2-3-1) on Thursday night at Bellingham High School.
