The Ferndale baseball team mobs Greg Roberts at first base after his game-winning single.

FERNDALE – When junior catcher Greg Roberts scored senior second baseman Ryan Whipkey with a base hit in the fourth inning, it was a much needed run that tied the game. When the duo executed the exact same task in the bottom of the eighth inning, it turned into a mob scene at first base with Roberts’ Golden Eagle teammates sprinting out to first base to celebrate the 2-1 victory over Sehome.

Roberts’ game-winner was the third hit he had picked up in the game, and he also reached base with a walk. Sophomore leadoff hitter Carson Peters also had three hits for Ferndale, which pushed his batting average near .500.

Golden Eagle junior Geirean Hatchett and Mariner senior Patrick Miksovsky both pitched well, each only allowing a run. Both teams went to their top relievers, respectively. Sehome senior Trevor Seaholm came in throwing strikes early and often. He struck out five batters in a little over three innings of work, and his first-pitch curve ball was keeping hitters on their toes.

Ferndale sophomore relief pitcher Slater Whitaker was dominant, and couldn’t miss the strike zone. 17 of his 23 pitches were strikes, and he ultimately walked away with the victory.

The Mariners scored in the top of the second inning when senior designated hitter Ethan Brown singled in sophomore center fielder Tim Malo.

The Golden Eagles (7-3) travel to Mount Baker (3-8) today to take on the Mountaineers at 4:30, while Sehome (5-6) will host Bellingham (1-9) this morning at 10:00.
