Bellingham coach Steve Chronister discusses strategy with his top doubles team of Nate Lyon and Caleb Imbach.

BELLINGHAM – Some strong competitors from south of Whatcom County took control of the singles and doubles tournament as Cole Balen of Archbishop Murphy won the singles tournament, while Sawyer Nichols and Andrew Van Egdom of Anacortes won the doubles tournament.

All three participants will compete at the state tournament in May.

Sedro-Woolley senior Owen Vellegas, who was recently named the Northwest Conference Player of the Year, defeated Sehome’s Harley Kaiser for second place in the tournament. Both advance to the state tournament, but Kaiser will represent as an alternate. Vellegas avenged a loss that he took from Kaiser in the semi-finals a few days earlier.

In doubles competition, the combination of Kounosuke Wilcox and Spencer Atkinson of Burlington-Edison earned a state berth when they took second place and defeated Bellingham’s Nate Lyon and Caleb Imbach. The Bayhawk duo will be the doubles alternate at state.
