Meridian 10, Granite Falls 2

The Trojans got off to a hot start of the season, and a 6-run second inning loaded with walks and errors allowed Meridian to jump out to an early lead. Silas Berschauer laced a single in the sixth inning to score Hunter Jones, and Ian Forbes scored Jonah Aase on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Junior Alex Short, Jones and Aase combined to strike out 15 batters and allow just two base hits. Aase also scored three runs and Jaeger Fyfe walked three times.

Already in mid-season form, junior righty Kieran Markusen pitched a complete game shut-out, which he allowed just one hit while striking out 14 Falcons, and he only needed 80 pitches to do it. Hunter Vezzetti drove in a game-high four runs, and Axel Puls scored three runs and collected three hits, including a double. Grady Swinburson had two hits, scored two runs and stole two bases.

Yes, a tie. Welcome to non-conference baseball. In a classic back-and-forth contest that saw the lead change hands quite a few times, the Raiders scored in the bottom of the seventh inning on a double to tie the game. Pioneer junior Kasey Newton started on the mound, and he struck out four batters in four innings of work. Bradley Blake pitched the final three innings and struck out three batters. Nooksack Valley broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth inning when Drew DeWispelaere singled home Mathew Blake. Bennett DeLange finished with two hits and Daemion Perez knocked in a pair of runs.

The Seahawks jumped out to a 5-0 advantage after two innings, but the Pioneers rallied in the fourth when Cole Bauman’s single scored Bennett DeLange to begin the scoring for Nooksack Valley. The Pioneers scored three more runs in the inning, but where ultimately outdone by Chief Sealth. Colby Martin led Nooksack Valley with a two hits. DeLange struck out five batters in three and 2/3 innings of work.
