BELLINGHAM – These Tigers were a little different than the Tigers that Bellingham faced last week. Burlington-Edison got on a roll early, put the pedal down and defeated the Bayhawks 41-7 at Civic Stadium on Friday night.
The Tigers scored three touchdowns in the first half, two of which came through the air.
Bellingham had a chance to get some points on the board just before halftime when junior linebacker Calvin VanHofwegen forced a fumble in the Burlington-Edison backfield, which sent the ball 20 yards backwards. Bayhawk senior linebacker Sonny Powell fell on it, and his teammates followed up with a decent drive. However, the 49-yard field goal attempt by German exchange student Constantine Frank fell short, and Bellingham was down 20-0 at the the half.
The Tigers returned the second-half kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown, and followed that up by recovering a fumble in the end zone.
Later in the third quarter, Burlington-Edison scored on a 17-yard touchdown run, which prompted the running the clock.
Junior quarterback Ben Leonard hit senior running back Owen Hanstead on a 14-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter for their lone touchdown of the game.
The Bellingham defense was led by senior linebacker Caiden Hamidian who finished with eight tackles. Senior safety Aiden Pullar had seven tackles, while VanHofwegen and sophomore defensive tackle Aaron Chaussee each had a tackle for loss and a forced fumble.
The Bayhawks (3-3) will face rival Sehome (3-3) on Friday at Civic Stadium at 7:00.
