ARLINGTON – The Storm scored four touchdowns in the first quarter, by four different players, as Squalicum plowed out ahead early and stayed the course in its 54-7 win over Lakewood at Dick Cardinal Stadium on Friday night.
Senior quarterback Cole Burke completed three touchdown passes in the first quarter, a 21-yarder to senior wide receiver Ansen Asbjornsen, a 70-yarder to sophomore running back Asher Asbjornsen and a 15-yard swing pass to senior running back Avery Weener.
Junior running back Maddox Strickland also got into the endzone in the first quarter, with a speedy 22-yard run.
The Cougars opened up the second quarter with a short touchdown run, which was set up by multiple passes down the field, but the Storm defense made sure those were the only points allowed that night.
Asher Asbjornsen scored his second touchdown of the game in the second quarter, and senior slot receiver Rhys Knowlton scored on a 1-yard pass from Burke, which brought Squalicum’s lead to 35-7 at the half.
After throwing four touchdowns in the first half, Burke called his own number early in the third quarter as he scored from a yard out. He finished with 294 yards passing on an incredible 18-of-20 through the air.
Junior wide receiver Jacob Truemper concluded the scoring when he took a fly sweep handoff 12 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
The Squalicum offense totaled 505 yards on 46 plays, while the defense was led by linebackers Jacob Clark and Brock Scammell, each of which finished 1.5 quarterback sacks. Squalicum also received sacks from sophomore Ely Chavez and senior Brenden Garcia, and an interception from Ansen Asbjornsen.
The Storm (2-2) will host Anacortes (4-0) on Friday at 7:00.
