Squalicum Escapes With Win Over 3A Warriors

EDMONDS – It was one last battle on the gridiron for the Storm seniors, and they took advantage of it as Squalicum defeated Edmonds-Woodway 14-12 at Edmonds District Stadium on Thursday night.

Both teams took chances early on, with nothing to lose, and it resulted in some big plays, a lot of penalties and zero points.

Weener

The Storm scored in the second quarter on a double-pass play as senior wide receiver hauled in a lateral and then he launched the football down the middle of the field where senior running back Avery Weener ran underneath it and scored from 39 yards out.

It was the second trick play ran by the Storm in the first half, as the first one was a halfback pass back to the quarterback as Weener’s pass back to senior quarterback Cole Burke netted his team 31 yards.

Weener also did his normal destruction on the defensive side of the ball as he finished with nine tackles, including a tackle for loss.

Other seniors shined as safeties Zack Watt and Rhys Knowlton were all over the field all game. Watt finished with a team-high 11 tackles, two tackles loss and pass broken up, and Knowlton added eight tackles and a tackle for loss.

Senior cornerback Khalil Binta also had a big game as he broke up five would-be Warrior completions on the night.

Watt

Edmonds-Woodway first got on the scoreboard in the third quarter after ripping off a 45-yard run, but the extra point bounced off the upright and was no good, which secured a 7-6 lead for the Storm.

Weener found the endzone again in the fourth quarter, this time on a 5-yard run, and sophomore Elias Larranaga’s kick made it an 8-point lead for Squalicum.

The Warriors put together a strong drive at the end of the game, and it resulted with a 3-yard touchdown run. They then attempted to tie the game with little time left on the clock, but the two-point conversion pass fell incomplete.

Senior wide receiver Ansen Asbjornsen also caught seven passes, and became the school’s all-time leader in receptions in a season with 67.

The Storm finished their season with a record of 6-4.
