Sedro-Woolley Silences Ferndale

SEDRO-WOOLLEY – The Golden Eagles knew going in that it would be a tall task, and the undefeated Cubs looked to be the part as they knocked off Ferndale 33-7 at Tom Mullen Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

An early 60-yard run got the Cubs down to the 2-yard line, where they promptly punched it in from there.

Johnson-Pruitt

After forcing a punt, Sedro-Woolley elected to go to the air for the first time, and it paid off with a 61-yard touchdown.

The Golden Eagles got some of the momentum late in the first quarter when junior defensive tackle Branden Arps deflected a screen pass into the hands of junior defensive end Jaden Johnson-Pruitt who then returned it 16 yards into Cub territory.

Ferndale turned its great field position into points on the scoreboard as Elliot Lenssen sped around the left end from four yards out, and Parker McManus’ extra point made it a 14-7 game early in the second quarter.

Sedro-Woolley would go on to score two more touchdowns in the second quarter, but the Golden Eagles looked to be the last team to score before the half after Lenssen ripped off a 59-yard run to bring his team into the red zone, but they were turned away just before the midway break.

Lenssen

Lenssen finished with a team-high 113 yards on 15 carries.

Ferndale put together a strong drive to start the third quarter, which involved a 25-yard pitch and catch from senior quarterback Nolan Boleak to senior wide receiver Cooper Vincent. It also featured a pair of long runs by senior fullback Jon Stanek, but an eventual fumble stopped any chances of a Golden Eagle score.

The Cubs milked eight and a half minutes in the fourth quarter on a long drive that ended with a 21-yard touchdown pass that put the final stamp on the game.

Ferndale’s defense was led by Stanek who had 8.5 tackles, including a tackle for loss. Junior cornerback Brock Heuck finished with 5.5 tackles and two passes broken up, and Lenssen added seven tackles.

The Golden Eagles (3-5) will host a game on Saturday night, but the opponent is still up in the air as the WesCo 3A South still has tiebreakers to iron out.
