The Washington State Boys and Girls Coaching Basketball Association voted for each classification’s State Player of the Year and Coach of the Year, and Whatcom County was well represented.
In girls basketball, Lynden head coach Rob Adams was named the 2A Coach of the Year after winning a third consecutive state championship while also capping another undefeated season.
Lynden forward Payton Mills was also named as the 2A Player of the Year after averaging 12.8 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.2 steals per game. She also shot 55.2% from the field, 32.5% from beyond the arc and 75.5% from the foul line. She finished her career with an amazing 1,422 points scored and 901 rebounds.
Lynden Christian guard Ella Fritts was named the 1A Player of the Year after averaging 14.9 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.8 steals and 0.8 blocks per game. She also shot 46.0% from the field, 40.8% from three-point land and 74.0% from the line. She finished her career with 1,261 points scored.
Lummi Nation forward Ailina Rabang was named the 1B Player of the Year after averaging 14.0 points, 7.7 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 5.4 steals and 0.4 blocks per game. She also shot 40.4% from the field, 27.0% from deep and 56.2% from the line.
In boys basketball, Lynden Christian head coach Tim Zylstra was named the 1A Coach of the Year after guiding the Lyncs to the state championship.
Lummi Nation head coach Jerome Toby was named the 1B Coach of the Year after winning his second straight state championship.
Lummi Nation point guard Jerome Toby, Jr was named the 1B Player of the Year after averaging 18.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 3.5 steals per game. He also shot 50.5% from the field, 28.6% from beyond the arc and 74.6% from the foul line.
Only seniors were eligible for the individual Player of the Year awards.
