ANACORTES – The big question coming into the game was, “Is Sehome up for the task?”
The answer: Yes, as the Mariners stayed even with the two-time defending state 2A champion Seahawks for a little over a half, but Anacortes made the big plays in the second half to pull out the 52-33 win at home on Friday night.
The Seahawks moved quickly down the field to score their first touchdown of the game, after getting great field position following a short punt and a decent return, but Sehome answered back with a 13-yard touchdown pass from senior Nolan Wright to fellow senior Al Miller.
The tie score of 7-7 would be short lived as the ensuing kickoff was returned 91 yards for a touchdown, and Anacortes was quickly back on top.
After a 42-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter, the Seahawks appeared that they would run away with it, but found out that the Mariners were there to play.
Sehome went on to score three touchdowns in the second quarter, two on short runs by running backs Sawyer Woods and Nicky Smith, respectively, and one on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Wright to 6-foot-4 senior wide receiver Theo Quiggle.
Anacortes also scored in the second quarter, and the shootout was on as the Mariners held a slim 27-26 lead at the half.
The Seahawks went on to score four touchdowns in the second half, and limited Sehome to just one trip into the endzone, an 8-yard hookup from Wright to Miller.
Wright finished with 308 yards passing on 21 completions. Quiggle caught nine passes for 150 yards and Miller hauled in five passes for 76 yards.
Anacortes showed why it was still the team to beat, and the Mariners showed their improvement as a team, and how dangerous they can be against anyone.
Sehome (1-1) will travel to Lakewood (0-2) on Friday to take on the Cougars at 7:00.
