ARLINGTON – Sehome broke the school record for points in a game, and did it on the road in a shut out as the Mariners defeated Lakewood 81-0 at Dick Cardinal Stadium on Friday night.
The previous record was 65 points, in the season finale against Blaine in 2017.
Senior quarterback Nolan Wright was on point all night, as he completed all eight of his first eight pass attempts for 198 yards. In fact, his first five attempts were receptions by five different receivers, but his favorite target on the evening was wide receiver Theo Quiggle.
The 6-foot-4 senior caught seven passes for 140 yards and four touchdowns. Wright also completed a touchdown pass to senior tight end Tyson Goodman which covered 56 yards.
Wright finished the game with 301 yards on 14-of-19 passing. Last week, Wright passed Zach Slesk, Tanner Myhre, Josh Kraght and Sterling Somers on the career passing yards list in Whatcom County history. In this game he passed Jordan Slesk, and now with 6,822 career passing yards he only sits behind Simon Burkett (7,850) and Casey Bauman (7,428).
In the running game, senior Sawyer Woods gained 48 yards and a touchdown, but it was the pleasant surprise of freshman Cash Barnes that took center stage as he totaled 62 yards and two touchdowns on just five carries.
All three phases were working for Sehome as Goodman also scored on an 18-yard interception return, and senior Hudson Neff took a punt back 42 yards for a score. It was the first punt return for a touchdown in three years for the Mariners.
Sehome’s defense was led by senior linebacker Finn Seitz-Gregoire who had two quarterback sacks, including a strip sack which was recovered by senior defensive tackle Cole Turrell inside the five-yard line. Senior cornerback Al Miller also had an interception to go along with Goodman’s pick six.
The Mariners (2-1) will host Burlington-Edison (2-1) on Friday at 7:00 at Civic Stadium.
